Year[ 1980 (corporation) and 1985 (foundation).
Size[ 250 in the corporation collection, 400 in the foundation collection.
Description[ The Kislak Corporation collection includes contemporary works by Hockney,
Stella, Clemente, Diebencorn, Indiana, Kelly, Sam Francis; photography by Berenice Abbott,
Imogen Cunningham, Kertesz; a mobile by Alexander Calder; tapestry by Rufino Tamayo; and
an antique Florida map collection. The Kislak Mortgage Corporation has recently donated Roy
Lichtenstein's stellar Modular Painting in Four Panels, no. 5, to the Lowe Art Museum in
Florida.
Kislak Foundation: Assembled over some 40 years, the Kislak Foundation collection includes
400 pieces of pre-Columbian pottery with a concentration in Mayan artifacts; art works,
artifacts, books, manuscripts, maps and historic documents related to early American history
and the cultures of Florida, the Caribbean and Mesoamerica. Foundation holdings include
significant original documents and books by historic figures from the great age of discovery
- manuscripts by explorers such as Hernando Corts, Francisco Pizarro, and Pedro Menndez
de Avils, conquistador of Florida, as well as seminal books by the earliest chroniclers of the
New World such as Christopher Columbus and Italian historian Peter Martyr. The collection
also includes unique later books and documents such as George Washington's 1762 diary and
letters in the hand of Thomas Jefferson from 1804 and 1809. Particularly important is the
Foundation's collection of Floridiana - books, manuscripts, maps and letters related to the early
history of Florida, from 16th century writings and drawings by the first European explorers to
later works by naturalists Audubon, Catesby and Bartram.
The Kislak collection of indigenous art of the Americas reflects more than 25 centuries of the
development of pre-Columbian culture, primarily in Mesoamerica, the northern center of high
civilization centered in Mexico and Guatemala. The collection includes objects extending from
the early Olmecs of Mexico (1800 B.C.) to the Aztecs, conquered by Corts in 1521. More
than half the collection represents objects created by the Maya, the most sophisticated
indigenous culture, whose classic period flourished from A.D. 200 to 900. More than 200
objects, mainly from Mexico and Guatemala, are displayed in the Kislak Foundation's gallery in
Miami Lakes, Florida. Also included are over 2,000 rare books, approximately 400
manuscripts and historic documents, about 450 maps, some 500 art works and a 5,000-
volume research library. An important recent acquisition is a series of eight panoramic
paintings portraying the historic Conquest of Mexico. Created in the second half of the 17th
century, the series is recognized as an outstanding example of Mexican colonial art.
Kislak rare book and manuscript collections include more than 1,500 rare books and 400
historic documents, as well as some 450 historic maps and a 2 ,000-volume reference library.
The collections focus on the early exploration and colonization of the Americas, especially the
region surrounding Florida and the Caribbean, during the period from the 16th century through
the 18th century. Kislak collections include many first editions of extremely rare books. Others
are the only copies existing in Florida. Unique original documents reveal information and
insights into the lives of important historic figures.

Exhibitions[ Visions of Empire: Picturing the Conquest in Colonial Mexico. The
exhibition Visions of Empire: Picturing the Conquest in Colonial Mexico provided a venue
for a group of important historical paintings documenting the conquest of a new territory - the
Americas. This exhibition, which also includes selected Aztec artworks, illustrates the presence
of a culturally rich pre-conquest society. It was the mixture of European and native cultures that
ultimately created the culture we now know as Mexican.
Works have been loaned to the Lowe Gallery, Miami; the Bacardi Corporation Gallery,
Miami; and the Center for Fine Arts, Miami.
Support[ The Jay I. Kislak Foundation is dedicated to supporting scholarly research and
contributing significantly to the knowledge and understanding of ancient and modern Florida,
Mesoamerica and the circum-Caribbean region. The Foundation supports research projects in
the disciplines of archaeology, history, art history, epigraphy, linguistics, ethno-history,
ethnography and sociology.
Research programs are developed by the Foundation independently or in collaboration with
other institutions. The Foundation sponsors and conducts various research activities that
explore, analyze, interpret and disseminate information based on the historic record of the
region. The Foundation's library is a significant resource for international scholarship in Florida
and Caribbean studies.

Governing[ Corporation.
Business[ Manufacturer of plumbing products, small engines and generators.
Year[ c. 1974.
Size[ Approximately 200 ceramics, cast iron and cast brass pieces.
Description[ A collection of approximately 200 ceramic, cast iron and cast metal works of
various sizes and treatments. The collection has been the result of an Arts/Industry program
that has invited visiting artists to spend time experimenting with the materials and equipment
available in the factory. Over the years, the company has acquired some of the ceramic art
from the artists in the program and has also purchased works from artists who have not been at
Kohler. The donation of finished work by program participants has steadily increased the size
of Kohler's corporate art collection. In addition to being displayed throughout Kohler factory
and office buildings, works from the corporate art collection can be found around the Village of
Kohler. A walking/driving "sculpture appreciation tour" is being developed for village residents
and visitors. At the company's corporate headquarters, the importance of art in everyday life
has been enhanced by a series of murals found in the main office lobby, and painted by
industrial artist Arthur Covey. The murals were one of former company president Walter J.
Kohler's endeavors to enrich the environment for the employees. It was his philosophy that
before a worker could aspire to greatness and pride of workmanship, he should be surrounded
by the best this country had to offer.
Location[ Kohler Design Center, Kohler, Wisconsin. Permanent collection pieces are also
displayed throughout the main office, factory buildings.
Viewing[ Items from the collection are rotated in a permanent exhibition gallery at Kohler
Design Center, which opened to the public in July 1985.

Source[ Artists, Arts/Industry Program.
Selection[ Committee of both corporate personnel and outside consultants. The Company
also works closely with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. For additional information: Kim
Cridler, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, 608 New York Ave., Box 489, Sheboygan, WI

Review[ Will accept unsolicited material (slides, catalogues, etc); write or call before
attempting to visit.
Status[ Works are occasionally loaned from the collection.
Exhibitions[ Works have appeared in exhibitions mounted by the John Michael Kohler Arts
Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and the Jane Hartsook Gallery, New York City.
Programs[ The company sponsors the ongoing Arts/Industry program during which artists
work at Kohler's pottery, enamel shop, or the iron and brass foundries. Kohler Co. has long
encouraged an ongoing dialogue with the art community by opening the doors of its pottery and
iron foundry to internationally recognized artists. In a program administered by the John Michael
Kohler Arts Center, artists work side by side with Kohler associates during long-term
residencies, utilizing industrial technology on projects of their own choosing. The resulting free
exchange of techniques and ideas has opened whole new avenues of creative expression for the
artists. The value of the Arts/Industry program to the factory can be assessed from both a
personal and business standpoint. For some, the experience of meeting artists from all over the
world is the most important aspect. For others, it's the bottom line -- over the years, design
ideas generated by artists have been translated into innovative new products offered by the
company.

"the jewel in the crown" of the city's historic architecture. Designed by eminent architect
Stanford White (McKim, Mead & White) and erected in 1889 in the heart of downtown
Omaha, the building was purchased and restored by the firm in the late 1970s. Striking
